*IAU Astronomy Translation Network (ATN) News - November 2018*
Dear friends and colleagues,
With a little bit of delay, we are happy to welcome you on the November
edition of the IAU Astronomy Translation Network News! The past month has
been eventful and busy, and we are glad to report that our network is
growing steadily, thanks to all of you!
In this edition, we are highlighting our new Project Manager, as well as
new ATN translations available on the IAU website.
*____*
*The ATN by Numbers -- 332 volunteers in 49 languages!*
The ATN has officially gone over 300 volunteers! Congratulations and thank
you all so much for your involvement and interest in our activities. A warm
welcome to our new volunteers!
Our super active *Portuguese Language Grou*p is still at the head of the
charts with 36 volunteers! Parabéns!
Our new *Malay Language Group* is close behind, with 31 volunteers who all
registered in the past month! Thank you so much, and welcome on the
Astronomy Translation Network!
*Number of volunteers per native language (November 2018)*
* Some volunteers registered plural native languages.
*What’s new on the platform *
-
In November, we received more than more than 30 registrations from
Malaysian native speakers! We have therefore established the *Malay
Language Group*, with their own Language Coordinator. Thank you so much
to all the Malay speakers for joining our activities, and if you know
anyone who would be interested in participating, please let them know they
can join in right here

!
-
We have uploaded a lot of our volunteers’ *IAU Themes translations on
the IAU website*! Please check them on this page

Finally, we are pleased to welcome our *new ATN Assistant Project
Manager*, *Pisit Nitiyanant* from the National Astronomical Research
Institute of Thailand (NARIT)! He is a Trainee there and will work at OAO
for the next 6 months. His skills as an outreach officer and project
manager will definitely support the ATN and everyone involved! He is also
passionate about learning foreign languages, so do not hesitate to
communicate with him! Some of already have, thank you so much for your warm
welcome!
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact him at
pisit en oao.iau.org.
*Looking for new resources to translate ?*
If you would like to take on more translation tasks, we have you covered!
This month we are suggesting two new resources: videos subtitles from
Poland and panels from an IAU100 Exhibition.
-
Produced by the Polish Television together with astronomers from the
Polish Astronomical Society, some episodes from the tv series “*Astronarium
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=ca4dab1083&e=fb19ad7f5b>*”
are available on Youtube with English subtitles, and the producers are
looking for volunteers to translate them in other languages! Please contact
the Polish Language Coordinator, Krzysztof Czart <krzysztof en czart.eu>,
who suggested this resource, for more information!
-
As part of the IAU100 Celebrations, the IAU100 Secretariat has just
released three versions of the *Above and Beyond Exhibition
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=a52d297485&e=fb19ad7f5b>*
that was featured in Vienna during the General Assembly this summer. This
exhibition, featuring some of the most relevant and astonishing
astronomical breakthroughs of the last century, is available in three
versions, which allows you to bring it to a venue near you in an affordable
customized way. The IAU is now interested in having it translated in as
many languages as possible.
*For practical reasons, we are suggesting our volunteers to translate
either the Full-scale DIY Exhibition

or the Down-scale Exhibition

which are easier and cheaper to print and assemble than the original one!*

(The most recent ones are on top)
-- If you have any resource suggestions for the month of December, please
feel free to contact us at translation en oao.iau.org.
*What’s next?*
We would like to thank all of our volunteers for the hard work and time
they devote to the ATN project, and what best way than to deliver a
certification? Signed by the OAO Supervising Director, this paper will
certify that you have translated astronomy resources for our platform and
will attest to your involvement with astronomy outreach!
*Last words*
*Message from Berenice:* After finishing my internship in November, I (and
the OAO team!) would like to deeply thank all of you for your work,
commitment and efforts towards the Astronomy Translation Network, and for
your kindness and patience with me. The community that we have built is
very dear to me, and as I am still involved in the ATN project, I am
looking forward to the next months of the project with you all!
*Message from Pisit: *สวัสดีครับ ("Sawatdi Khrap" - Formal male case of
"Hello" in Thai). My name is Pisit, and I am an astronomy outreach officer
at NARIT, Thailand. I will be supporting all of you as ATN Assistant
Project Manager from December 2018 to May 2019. I hope to do my very best
to support you all and to help ATN grow. As I just arrived to ATN there is
still a lot for me to learn, and I will feel honoured if I can count with
your support in the upcoming months. Since my personal interests are
related to multiculturality and to learn different languages, I feel
particularly happy to be here and eager to learn many things.
*___*
We are constantly looking to improve our project and your suggestions are
essential. Contact us at translation en oao.iau.org!
Best wishes,
Berenice Himmelfarb, ATN Assistant Project Manager
Pisit Nitiyanant, NARIT-OAO Trainee and ATN Assistant Project Manager
Sze-Leung Cheung, ATN Advisor and OAO International Outreach Coordinator
