Subject: Gemini Posting - Head of Technology Development Department
Aloha/Hola,
Gemini Observatory has an immediate opening for Head of Technology
Development Department. The position will be based at Gemini South, La
Serena,Chile.
Description: Gemini Observatory is recruiting for someone to head its
Technology Development Department (TDD). The TDD’s mission is to support
internal and external development efforts for the observatory by
investigating and implementing new technologies to improve our telescope,
Adaptive Optics (AO), and instrument systems. The TDD consists of Gemini’s
Adaptive Optics group, Detector Engineer, and scientists focused on
maximizing the scientific productivity of Gemini’s telescope systems. The
TDD Head is responsible for continuing to develop Gemini’s telescope and AO
facilities to produce valuable and efficient science products for our user
community. We are especially looking for people with AO and observatory
operations and development management experience. The ideal TDD Head will be
motivated by the opportunity to develop the department’s staff and take
ownership of its mission to keep Gemini’s telescope and AO systems
compelling for their users.
The Gemini Observatory has a rich AO program with the world-leading
capabilities of both GPI and our multi-conjugate AO system (GeMS) at Gemini
South, and our long history offering Altair at Gemini North. Future planned
AO activities include improving and upgrading the Gemini North adaptive
optics system, formed by Altair (AO bench) and its related Laser Guide Star
facility, and implementation of several in-progress upgrades to GeMS,
including a new laser, natural guide star wavefront sensor, and deformable
mirror.
Requirements
Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:
• Undergraduate degree in astronomy, adaptive optics, or related technical
field required.
• Graduate degree in relevant field is required, however equivalent
experience may substitute for an advanced degree.
• Some formal management education and training required.
• Five years of experience in managing technical groups and projects,
preferably in an observatory or instrumentation development environment and
preferably in AO.
• Must have knowledge of telescope systems, optics, electronics, software
and mechanical design principles, and technologies used in adaptive optics
(like deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors).
• Must be fluent in written and spoken English. Spanish language skills
desired.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) are essential to
create and deliver clear and inspiring presentations and reports.
