[AAA] IYL Astronomy Progress

Dear IYL Working Group Colleague,

I’m pleased to report that the IAU Executive Committee officially
established our IYL Working Group and allocated to us 30k€ for seed
money support of cornerstone projects.  Connie, Sze-leung and I have
been working on calls for proposals and proposal templates of two
sorts.  One is for support and/or endorsement of cornerstone projects.
 You will see that the call for proposals lists a set of criteria
(that we have discussed in a preliminary way through email), and will
entertain proposals that ask for money and/or our official
endorsement.  That call has a fixed due date which is quite soon,
after which we will stage a rapid review so that we can distribute the
money in a timely fashion.  The other call is a general one for
official endorsement of other astronomy programs on essentially any
scale that would like to claim official endorsement in connection with
the IYL.  Again, please review and react to the criteria and how the
proposal form will allow the proposers to address those criteria.

I would like to task you with a very short turnaround task, and a more
substantive one.  The next IAU newsletter is coming out this weekend,
and we would like to have the proposal calls and forms posted and
available for that edition.  Consequently, your comments on the form
and substance of the documents are both highly valued and have a short
time fuse.  Please send me your comments on the documents by 12:00
noon GMT this Friday, May 23rd.

Our commitment is then to be proactive to solicit good cornerstone
project proposals to assure an outstanding astronomy presence in the
IYL.  My advice for this activity - don’t assume.  We should make sure
that the projects we want to see as cornerstones are mobilizing for an
IYL activity and that their champions are preparing to propose, at
least for endorsement. The same goes for our national and regional
programs, with a longer timeframe.

Our activities are now waking up, and I look forward to hearing from you
soon.
