First International TOROS Workshop
Gravitational Wave and Optical Astronomy in the Southern Cone
Salta, Argentina, June 27 and 28, 2013

TOROS (Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South) is an effort
sustained by scientists from the University of Texas at Brownsville, the
Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, Caltech, Texas A&M University and the
Universidad Nacional de Salta to develop an astronomical observatory in 
the
Southern hemisphere. Its main motivation is the need for dedicated optical
follow-up instruments that can respond to triggers from the new generation
of interferometric gravitational wave detectors expected to come online in
2015-16. TOROS will also play a role in the identification and follow-up
observations of other optical and near infrared transients in the southern
sky. The observatory will be located in Cordon Macón, at an altitude of
4,650 meters and approximately 380 kilometers away from the city of Salta.
The purpose of the workshop is two-fold:
(1) to discuss issues related to instrumentation requirements, data
reduction pipelines, storage and processing, and strategies for follow-up
of gravitational wave events and post-processing of transient 
observations;
(2) to discuss the scientific implications of the first GW detections and
outline the immediate questions that could be addressed with
electromagnetic follow-up observations of these events and transients of
astrophysical relevance in general.
We expect this to be a small workshop with some limitations for seating.
Contributions on any topic related to the observation, detection and
characterization of astronomical transients, particularly if related
to joint observations with advanced gravitational wave interferometers are
welcome.
Please indicate in the registration form (linked above) if you are
interested in giving a talk or presenting a poster (time allocation for
talks will depend on the final program which will be announced by April 
30,
2013)
We are happy to report that thanks to funding from the Center for
Gravitational Wave Astronomy at UTB and the Universities of Salta and
Cordoba there will be no registration fee, but participants will need to
bear their own costs.
