The SUPERMACHO Collaboration and the Department of Astronomy and
Astrophysics of Pontificia Universidad Catolica invite applications for a
fellowship in observational astronomy, to begin in September, 2004. The
appointment for this jointly funded postdoctoral position is for two
years. The successful candidate is expected to join the research of the
SUPERMACHO Collaboration, as a full member of the team. This
collaboration, involving scientists from the USA, Canada, Australia and
Chile, is pursuing an NOAO survey to establish the nature of the lens
population contributing the excess microlensing observed
toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (see www.ctio.noao.edu/~supermacho/).
The post will be based with Universidad Catolica in Santiago. The
Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (see www.astro.puc.cl) provides
an international environment with over a dozen active researchers. Chile
has the greatest concentration of large telescopes in the southern
hemisphere. While resident in Chile, the fellow will qualify as a member
of the Chilean community, being eligible to propose for observing time on
all telescopes in the country, including ESO's 3.5m NTT and 4x8m VLT, the
CTIO 4m Blanco and 3.5m SOAR, the Gemini 8m, and Carnegie's 2.5m and two
Magellan 6.5 m telescopes, among others. Further information can be
obtained from D. Minniti (dante en astro.puc.cl), A. Clocchiatti
(aclocchi en astro.puc.cl), K. Cook (kcook en ucllnl.org), C. Smith
(csmith en ctio.noao.edu), or C. Stubbs (cstubbs en fas.harvard.edu). Applicants
should send a curriculum vitae, bibliography, and research plan, and
arrange for three recommendation letters to be sent to the above address
by June 15th, 2004.
