SUPERNOVA 2013F IN IC 5325 = PSN J23284503-4119562
     S. Howerton, Arkansas City, KS, U.S.A.; A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski,
A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams, California Institute of Technology;
J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad
Catolica de Chile; R. H. McNaught, Australian National University; and E.
Christensen and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of
Arizona, report the discovery of an apparent supernova in public images from
the Siding Spring Survey (SSS).

 SN 2013 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2013F    Jan. 5.45   23 28 45.03  -41 19 56.2   17.1    18".0 E, 4".3 N

Nothing is visible at this position on an SSS image from 2012 Nov. 20.51 UT
(limiting mag 19.2). The variable was designated PSN J23284503-4119562 when
it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated
SN 2013F based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below.

     J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; N. Elias-Rosa, Institut de Ciencies
de L'Espai (CSIC-IEEC), Barcelona; A. Pastorello, S. Benetti, Osservatorio
Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF); M.
Stritzinger, Aarhus University; A. Drake, California Institute of Technology;
N. Morrell, C. Contreras, and E. Y. Hsiao, Las Campanas Observatory, report
that optical spectroscopy (range 370-920 nm; resolution 0.7 nm), obtained on
2013 Jan. 8.04 UT with the 2.5-m du Pont Telescope (+ WFCCD) at the Las
Campanas Observatory, shows that PSN J23284503-4119562 = SN 2013F is a young
type-Ib/c supernova. Adopting for the host galaxy (IC 5325) the redshift z =
0.005 (e.g., da Costa et al. 1991, Ap.J. Suppl. 75, 935; via NED) and a
significant interstellar reddening, with E(B-V) about 0.8, the best fit is
obtained with the type-Ic supernova 2007gr (Valenti et al. 2008, Ap.J. Let.
673, 155; Hunter et al. 2009, A.Ap. 508, 371), about 7-10 days before maximum
light. Ca II, Mg II, Fe II, Na I, Si II, C II, and O I lines are clearly
detected in the spectrum. The expansion velocity, as deduced from the
position of the Si II 635.5-nm absorption, is about 8600 km/s. The
classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383)
and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
