SUPERNOVA 2013hf IN ESO 365-G16 = PSN J06251007-3720413
     J. Maza, S. Gonzalez, E. Maureira, F. Forster, E. Cosgrove, L. E.
Gonzalez, and R. Antezana, Universidad de Chile; and G. Pignata, Universidad
Andres Bello, on behalf of the CATA Supernova Search (which is part of the
Center of Astrophysics and Associated Technologies), report the discovery of
an apparent supernova (magnitude approximately 17.0) on two unfiltered 60-s
exposures taken on Dec. 7.17 UT with the 0.50-m CATA500 telescope located at
Cerro Tololo. The new object is located at R.A. = 6h25m10s.07 +/- 0".2, Decl.
= -37d20'41".3 +/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 5".0 west and 16".2
south of the nucleus of the galaxy ESO 365-G16. Nothing is visible at this
position on an image taken on May 3.97 (limiting magnitude 19.5). The
variable was designated PSN J06251007-3720413 when it was posted at the
Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2013hf based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below.

     E. Y. Hsiao, N. Morrell, and Mark M. Phillips, Las Campanas Observatory;
and T. Diamond, Florida State University, report that a near-infrared
spectrogram (range 800-2400 nm) of PSN J06251007-3720413 = SN 2013hf was
obtained on Dec. 9.32 UT with the FoldedPort Infrared Echellette (FIRE)
spectrograph on the 6.5-m Magellan Baade Telescope. The spectrum indicates
that 2013hf is a young type-II supernova. The near-infrared spectrum shows a
blue continuum with several weak P-Cyg lines of hydrogen Paschen series.

Gonzalez-Gaitan, E. Maureira, F. Forster, E. Cosgrove, L. E. Gonzalez, and R.
Antezana, Universidad de Chile; and G. Pignata, Universidad Andres Bello,
report the spectroscopic classification of PSN J06251006-3720413 = SN 2013hf,
obtained through PESSTO, the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient
Objects (see website URL http://www.pessto.org; see also Valenti et al., as
posted at URL http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=4037). The spectrum
was taken using the ESO New Technology Telescope at La Silla on Dec. 11.3 UT,
with EFOSC2 and Grism 13 (range 398.5-931.5 nm; 1.8-nm resolution), and shows
2013hf to be a young type-II supernova. The spectrum shows broad and weak
H_alpha and H_beta emission on a blue continuum, consistent with a type-II
supernova at a few days after explosion. The classification was done with
SNID (Blondin and Tonry, 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) and GELATO (Harutyunyan
et al., 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383).
