SUPERNOVA 2012es IN NGC 5597 = PSN J14242911-1645392
     L. A. G. Monard, Calitzdorp, Western Cape, South Africa, reports his
discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 16.3) on unfiltered CCD images taken
on Aug. 12.771 and 13.713 UT.  The new object is located at R.A. =
14h24m29s.11, Decl. = -16d45'39".2 (equinox 2000.0; UCAC2 reference stars),
which is 24" east and 8" north of the core of the Scd-type galaxy NGC 5597.
Nothing is visible at this position in red Digitized Sky Survey images
(limiting mag 20.5) or on earlier images taken by Monard to limiting mag
18.5 and deeper.  The variable was designated PSN J14242911-1645392 when it
was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN
2012es based on the spectroscopic confirmation reported below.  Additional
CCD magnitudes for 2012es:  2012 May 10.93, [18.0 (Monard); Aug. 16.401,
16.2 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; infrared filter, bandpass > 700
nm; position end figures 29s.13, 39".3; image posted at website URL

     M. Turatto, S. Benetti, and A. Pastorello, Osservatorio Astronomico di
Padova, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica; F. Cellier-Holtzem, Laboratoire de
Physique Nucleaire et de Hautes Energies, Paris; and C. Inserra, S. Smartt, M.
Fraser, and D. Wright, Queen's University, Belfast, on behalf of the European
Southern Observatory (ESO) Large Program on Supernovae, report that a
spectrogram of PSN J14242911-1645392 = SN 2012es, obtained on Aug. 24.94 UT
with the ESO's New Technology Telescope (+ EFOSC2; range 399-932 nm;
resolution 1.8 nm) suggests that this is a type-IIb supernova.  Comparison
with a library of supernovae spectra via GELATO (Harutyuyan et al. 2008,
A.Ap. 488, 383) shows close similarities to SNe 2008bo, 2008ax, and 2000H.
