SUPERNOVA 2012ep
     A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, A. Mahabal, and R. Williams,
California Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M.
Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; and S. M. Larson and E.
Christensen, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, report the
discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS)
images:

SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2012ep Aug. 28.31 23 16 22.09 +24 15 18.6 18.9 2" north

Nothing was visible at this position on a CSS image taken on June 22.42 UT
(limiting mag 20.2).

     L. Tomasella, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, A. Pastorello, M. Turatto, and
S. Valenti, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto Nazionale di
Astrofisica, report that a spectrogram of 2012ep, obtained on Sept. 11.01 UT
with the Asiago 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC; range 350-820 nm,
resolution 1.3 nm), suggests that this is a normal type-Ia supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra via the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows
that 2012ep is similar to several normal type-Ia supernovae at two weeks
after maximum with a redshift of about 0.1.
