SUPERNOVA 2012gz
     A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, A. Mahabal, and R. Williams,
California Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M.
Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; and S. M. Larson and E.
Christensen, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, report
the discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS)
images:

SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2012gz Nov. 20.25 2 50 17.61 +32 24 39.9 17.2 1" S

Nothing was visible at this position on a CSS image from Nov. 4.25 UT
(limiting mag 20.5).

T.-W. Chen, R. Kotak, and M. Fraser, Queen's University, Belfast, report
that a spectrogram (range 330-975 nm; resolution about 1000) of SN 2012gz was
obtained on Nov. 22.16 UT with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (+ ISIS).
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra via the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows
that 2012gz matches a number of normal type-Ia supernovae such as SN 2004eo
and SN 2003cg about a week before maximum light at a redshift of z = 0.03.
