SUPERNOVA 2012ci IN IC 4475 = PSN J14382348+2320551
     A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, A. Mahabal, and R. Williams,
California Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M.
Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; E. C. Beshore and S. M.
Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and E.
Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the discovery of an apparent supernova
in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:

 SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2012ci    May 16.36   14 38 23.48  +23 20 55.1   17.6    3".0 E, 54".2 N

The variable was designated PSN J14382348+2320551 when it was posted at the
Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012ci based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below. Additional CCD magnitudes for
2012ci (unfiltered unless noted otherwise): Apr. 25.26 UT, [19.3 (CSS); May
16.965, 17.7 (Federica Luppi and Luca Buzzi, Varese, Italy; 0.38-m f/6.8
reflector; position end figures 23s.48, 55".3; reference stars from CMC-14
catalogue; nothing visible at this position in Digitized Sky Survey images;

17.026, R_c = 17.5 (Massimiliano Martignoni, Magnago, Italy, 0.25-m reflector);
18.381, 17.7 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; luminance filter;
position end figures 23s.51, 55".3). Brimacombe's image is posted at website

     G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on
behalf of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that a spectrum (range 340-740 nm)
of PSN J14382348+2320551 = 2012ci was obtained on May 18 UT by J. Irwin with
the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST).  Cross-correlation
with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code
(SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2012ci is a type-Ia
supernova more than one week after maximum light. A good fit is found to the
template of the 1991bg-like type-Ia supernova 1999da at +7 days.
