SUPERNOVA 2012bd
Vladimir Lipunov reports the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 18.1)
on five unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.8) taken with the MASTER II
dual 40-cm telescope (+ Apogee CCD Alta U16m camera; field-of-view 2 deg x 4
deg) at the Tunka observatory as part of the MASTER auto-detection system on
Mar. 14.839 UT. The new object (designated SN 2012bd based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below) is located at R.A. = 16h31m05s.47,
Decl. = +61d55'48".4 (equinox 2000.0 presumed). Nothing is visible at this
position on images obtained on 2011 May 1.73 (limiting mag 20.1); their images
are posted at URL http://master.sai.msu.ru/static/OT/163105.47615548.4.png.

     L. Tomasella, A. Pastorello, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, P. Ochner, M.
Turatto, and S. Valenti, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio
Astronomico di Padova, report that a spectrogram of 2012bd, obtained on Mar.
18.10 UT with the 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC; range 340-790 nm,
resolution 2.3 nm), indicates that it is a type-II supernova similar to the
narrow-line type-IIP supernova 1997D (Turatto et al. 1998, Ap.J. 498, L129).
The expansion velocity of the ejected material, as deduced from the position
of the H_alpha P-Cyg absorption, is about 2700 km/s.
