SUPERNOVA 2012hp IN UGC 2893 = PSN J03541733+3630387
     A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, A. Mahabal, and R. Williams,
California Institute of Technology; J. L. Prieto, Princeton University; M.
Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; and S. M. Larson and E.
Christensen, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, report the
discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS)
images:

SN 2012 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2012hp Dec. 9.21 3 54 17.33 +36 30 38.7 16.2 19".8 E, 6".7 N

The variable was designated PSN J03541733+3630387 when it was posted at the
Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012hp based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below. Further CCD magnitudes for 2012hp:
Nov. 20.35 UT, [17.5 (CSS); Dec. 3.42, 16.7 (CSS); 10.932, R_c = 16.0 (M.
Martignoni, Magnago, Italy; 25-cm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector; position
end figures 17s.40, 38".7); 10.977, 16.4 (Federica Luppi and Luca Buzzi,
Varese, Italy; position end figures 17s.38, 38".9; image posted at website

(CSIC-IEEC), Barcelona; S. Taubenberger, Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astrophysik,
Garching; and L. Tomasella, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto
Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that an optical spectrogram (range 350-820
nm; resolution 1.3 nm) of PSN J03541733+3630387 = SN 2012hp was obtained with
the Asiago 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC) on Dec. 10.05 UT, showing
typical features of a type-Ia supernova. A good match is found with several
normal type-Ia supernovae a few days before maximum light. At a redshift of
0.019 (Springob et al. 2005, Ap.J. Suppl. 160, 149; via NED) the expansion
velocity of the ejected material, as deduced from the position of the Si II
635.5-nm absorption, is about 10600 km/s. The Asiago classification spectra
are posted at website URL http://graspa.oapd.inaf.it; classification was
made with GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) and SNID (Blondin
and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
