COMET P/2011 N1
An apparently asteroidal object reported by Ignacio de la
Cueva, Ibiza, Spain (from exposures taken by J. L. Ortiz, P.
Santos-Sanz, N. Morales, and himself with a 0.40-m f/3.7 reflector
at San Pedro de Atacama, Chile; discovery observation tabulated
below) was found to show cometary appearance after initial posting
on the Minor Planet Center's 'NEOCP' webpage. On July 3.4 and 4.4
UT, de la Cueva, Morales, and Ortiz obtained CCD images with a
0.45-m reflector at Cerro Burek (Chile) that show a tail extending
about 10" and 55" in the anti-solar direction, respectively (noting
also a central condensation of mag 18.5-18.7 but not mentioning
anything about a coma). R. Holmes, Ashmore, IL, USA, reports that
co-added CCD images taken by T. Linder, V. Hoette, and himself with
a 0.41-m f/11 reflector on July 7.3 under poor sky conditions show
an elongated coma 5".8 in diameter with a very short, relatively
broad tail extending 10".8 in p.a. 288 deg. N. Howes, G. Sostero,
and E. Guido remotely used the 2.0-m f/10 "Faulkes Telescope South"
at Haleakala to obtain 20-s Bessel-R-filtered exposures on July 7.7
that show an elliptical coma of size about 7" x 4", elongated
toward the west, with a sharp central condensation and a tail
nearly 10" long toward p.a. 270 deg.
