SUPERNOVA 2011fi IN NGC 1954 = PSN J05325279-1405170
     S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the discovery by Koichi Itagaki
(Teppo-cho, Yamagata, Japan) of an apparent supernova (mag 17.8) on unfiltered
CCD frames (limiting mag 19.0) taken on Aug. 27.772 UT using a 0.60-m f/5.7
reflector (+ BITRAN BT-21 camera). The new object (which was designated PSN
J05325279-1405170 when it was posted on the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and
is here designated SN 2011fi based on the spectroscopic report below) is
located at R.A. = 5h32m52s.79, Decl. = -14d05'17".0 (equinox 2000.0), which
is 65" east and 92" south of the center of NGC 1954. Nothing is visible at
this position on Itagaki's image taken of NGC 1954 on 2006 Sept. 23.778
(limiting mag 19.5) or on the Digitized Sky Survey (limiting mag about 20;
no bandpass or date provided). SN 2010ko also appeared in this galaxy (cf.
CBETs 2569, 2570, 2575). Itagaki has posted an image of 2011fi at website
URL http://www.k-itagaki.jp/psn-1954.jpg.  Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns,
Australia, reports unfiltered CCD mag 17.5 and position end figures 52s.81,
17".2 for 2011fi on Aug. 28.457; his image is posted at the following website
URL:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/6090897094/.

    R. J. Foley, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, reports that
inspection of CCD spectra (range 450-1020 nm), obtained on Aug. 29 UT with the
Magellan Baade 6.5-m telescope (+ IMACS), shows that PSN J05325279-1405170 =
SN 2011fi is a type-II supernova.  It has a relatively normal spectrum;
however, there exists a narrow, low-velocity H_alpha absorption feature.
After removing a host-galaxy recession velocity of 3130 km/s, the minimum of
this feature is blueshifted by 2200 km/s and has a FWHM of 1000 km/s.
