SUPERNOVAE 2009el AND 2009em
     G. Folatelli and N. Morrell, on behalf of the Millennium Center for
Supernova Science and the Carnegie Supernova Project collaboration, report
that they obtained spectroscopic observations (range 397-1013 nm) of 2009el
(cf. CBET 1797) and 2009em (cf. CBETs 1798, 1806) on May 14.1 and 14.4 UT,
respectively, with the 6.5-m Magellan I Baade telescope (+ IMACS) at Las
Campanas Observatory. Inspection of the data reveals that 2009el is a young
type-II supernova showing a blue (although obviously reddened) continuum
with superimposed P-Cyg features of Balmer lines. Adopting for ESO 269-74
the NED recession velocity of 3109 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey Final
Catalogue, 2006) the minimum of the H-beta absorption is blueshifted by
roughly 9800 km/s. Na I interstellar absorption with an equivalent width
of 0.23-nm is observed at the host-galaxy redshift.
SN 2009em is a type-Ic supernova several weeks past maximum light.
Assuming for the host galaxy the NED redshift of 1652 km/s (H I Parkes
All-Sky Survey Final Catalogue, 2006), the 'Supernova Identification'
tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) provides matches with
several normal type-Ic events between one and two months from maximum
brightness.
