SUPERNOVAE 2009fi AND 2009fl
     T. N. Steele, X. Wang, I. K. W. Kleiser, and A. V. Filippenko, University
of California, Berkeley, report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range
330-1080 nm), obtained on May 31 UT with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at
Lick Observatory, shows that SN 2009fl (CBET 1823) is a 1991bg-like type-Ia
supernova. After removal of the host galaxy recession velocity of 8820 km/s
(Wegner et al. 1999, MNRAS 305, 259), the absorption minimum of the Si II
635.5-nm line is found to be blueshifted by 11000 km/s. Cross-correlation
with a library of supernova spectra using the "SuperNova IDentification"
code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates that 2009fl
is most similar to SN 1986G near maximum light.
     P. Challis, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf
of the CfA Supernova Group, reports that a spectrum (range 360-750 nm) of
2009fi (CBET 1821), obtained on June 1 UT by W. Peters with the F. L. Whipple
Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+ FAST), shows it to be a type-IIb supernova.
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the SNID code
indicates that the spectrum of 2009fi best resembles the type-IIb supernova
1997dd around maximum light; the redshift, as measured from emission lines
in the host galaxy (PGC 50294), is 0.015. Challis adds that a spectrum of
2009fl, also obtained on June 1 by Peters, shows it to be a type-Ia supernova;
cross-correlation via SNID indicates that 2009fl is subluminous type-Ia
supernova around maximum light.
