SUPERNOVA 2009hm IN NGC 7083
     P. Marples, Loganholme, Queensland, Australia, reports the apparent
discovery of a supernova in NGC 7083 by Stuart Parker (Oxford, Canterbury,
New Zealand) on a 55-s unfiltered CCD image (0.35-m Celestron C14 F6.3 SCT
and ST8 CCD camera) obtained on July 17.702 UT. C. Drescher (Calamvale,
Queensland, Australia) measured the position as R.A. = 21h35m44s.44, Decl. =
-63d54'23".6 (equinox 2000.0, Astrometrica, USNO-B1.0 catalogue) and the
magnitude as R = 14.7. The object was also present on images obtained by
Parker (60-s unfiltered image on July 18.305) and by Marples (25-s unfiltered
images on July 18.39 and 18.49, 0.305-m LX200 ACF), Drescher's measurements
from Marples' second image giving positional end figures 44s.39, 24".0 and
magnitude R = 14.6.

Marples adds that nothing is visible at the object's position on either
a Digitized Sky Survey image from 1996 Sept. 8 (limiting magnitude R =
18.1) or an image obtained by Parker on 2009 May 28.75 (limiting magnitude
R = 16.6).

The supernova was independently discovered by Berto Monard (Bronberg
Observatory, Pretoria, South Africa) on a stack of four CCD images obtained
on July 17.862 UT. Monard gives the unfiltered magnitude as 15.4 (+/- 0.1) and
position end figures 44s.32, 23".2 (2" west and 13" south of the core of NGC
7083; UCAC2). Nothing was visible at the object's position on June 20.031
(limiting magnitude 18.7).

Supernova 1983Y was also detected in this galaxy (cf. IAUC 3792).
