SUPERNOVA 2009mz IN NGC 5426
     L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (magnitude 15.1 +/- 0.2) on four unfiltered CCD images
taken on Dec. 26.087 UT at the Bronberg Observatory. The new object is
located at R.A. = 14h03m24s.64, Decl. = -6o03'31".3 (equinox 2000.0), which
is 3" west and 48" north of galaxy core of the nearby type Sc galaxy NGC 5426
and located close to the end of a spiral arm. Nothing is visible at this
position in Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) images (limiting red mag 20.5) or on
Monard's previous image of this galaxy taken on 2009 Sept. 2.701 (limiting
mag 17.5). J. Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, reports that he took a 300-s
CCD exposure remotely using a 0.5-m reflector (+ STL11K camera) at New Mexico
Skies Observatory (near Mayhill, NM), on Dec. 26.546, which shows the new
object at mag approximately 14.7; he has posted his image at the following
website URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/4216171785/.
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, C.
Jacques and E. Pimentel, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, write that they imaged the
new object remotely with a 25-cm f/3.3 reflector at the GRAS observatory
near Mayhill, NM, U.S.A.; a 180-s unfiltered exposure (limiting magnitude
18.1) taken on Dec. 27.48 yields mag 15.2 and position end figures 24s.63,
30".0, adding that nothing is visible at this position on a DSS from 1995
May 31 (limiting red magnitude 19.5). The type-Ia supernova 1991B also
appeared in NGC 5426 (cf. IAUCs 5163, 5164, 5170).
