SUPERNOVA 2008gn
EDITOR'S NOTE: The item below replaces the text on CBET 1550
(corrected position).
Further to CBET 1538, M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de
Chile; A. J. Drake, A. Mahabal, S. G. Djorgovski, M. J. Graham, and R.
Williams, California Institute of Technology; E. C. Beshore, S. M. Larson,
and R. Hill, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and
E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the CRTS discovery of a supernova
in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:

SN 2008 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
 2008gn Sep. 24.42 4 06 29.50 +14 52 14.0 17.8 10".3 E, 9".4 S

Additional magnitudes for 2008gn, from image obtained with the Palomar
1.52-m reflector (+ Gunn r filter) unless otherwise noted: Mar. 9.13 UT,
[19.5 (CSS); Sept. 25.29, 18.1; 26.29, 18.1; 27.28, 18.0; 28.1, 18.1. The
faint host galaxy is seen in co-added images from the Palomar-Quest survey.
A noisy spectrogram was obtained with the SMARTS 1.5-m telescope on Oct.
2.25 and exhibits broad features consistent with a supernova. J. M.
Silverman, B. E. Cobb, M. McCourt, and A. V. Filippenko find that 2008gn
is a type-Ia supernova from an optical spectrum obtained on Oct. 22.42
using the Kast spectrograph on the Lick 3-m telescope.
