SUPERNOVA 2008gl IN UGC 881
     J. L. Prieto, Ohio State University, reports that optical spectra
(range 410-750 nm) of 2008gl (cf. CBET 1545) were obtained with the Hiltner
2.4-m telescope (+ Modspec) at MDM Observatory on Oct. 22.3 UT. Cross-
correlation with a library of supernova spectra using SNID (Blondin and
Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) shows that 2008gl is a normal type-Ia supenova
around maximum light. An expansion velocity of 13300 km/s is derived from
the absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature, using a recession
velocity of 10198 km/s for the host galaxy, UGC 881 (Huchra et al. 1999,
Ap.J. Suppl. 121, 287).
     E. Y. Hsiao, M. L. Graham, C. J. Pritchet, A. Parker, S. Sadavoy, and
D. Balam, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria,
report that a spectrogram (range 390-703 nm, resolution 0.3 nm) of 2008gl,
obtained on Oct. 22.49 UT with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National
Research Council of Canada, shows it to be a type-Ia supernova a few days
past maximum light. Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra
using the "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J.
666, 1024) indicates that 2008gl is most similar to the type-Ia supernova
1994M at four days past maximum light. The redshift derived from the fit
is consistent with the published redshift of UGC 881 (z = 0.034, from
Huchra et al. 1999, Ap.J. Suppl. 121, 287).
