SUPERNOVAE 2008gq and 2008gr
     M. Stritzinger, N. Morrell, F. Salgado, and M. Hamuy, on behalf of the
Carnegie Supernova Project and the Millennium Center for Supernova
Astrophysics collaboration, report that they obtained spectra (range 403-1070
nm) of 2008gq (cf. CBET 1556) and 2008gr (cf. CBET 1557) with the Las Campanas
Magellan Baade Telescope (+ IMACS) on Nov. 2.1-2.2 UT. After close inspection
of the spectrum of 2008gq, they conclude that it is a type-IIp supernova a
couple of months past explosion; adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of
3628 km/s (de Vaucouleurs et al., Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies,
Version 3.9) for the host galaxy (MCG -02-26-39), H-beta is measured to be
blue-shifted by roughly 5000 km/s.
The spectrum of 2008gr displays a blue continuum with incipient P-Cyg
profiles in Balmer and He I lines, indicative of a young type-IIp supernova.
With the aid of the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry
2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), 2008gr is found to be most similar to the type-IIp
supernova 2006bp a week past explosion. Adopting a host-galaxy recession
velocity of 6831 km/s (da Costa et al. 1998, A.J. 116, 1) for the host galaxy
(IC 1579), H-beta is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 11000 km/s.
