SUPERNOVA 2008N IN NGC 4273
     G. Folatelli and F. Olivares, University of Chile, on the behalf of the
Millennium Center for Supernova Studies and Carnegie Supernova Project
collaboration, report that a spectrogram (range 558-932 nm) of 2008N (cf.
CBET 1215), obtained on Jan. 26.36 UT with the European Southern Observatory
3.6-m telescope (+ EFOSC2) at La Silla, shows this to be a type-II supernova
about one month after explosion. Strong P-Cyg features due to H-alpha and
the Ca II infrared triplet dominate the spectrum. Cross-correlation with a
library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code
(SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) provides matches to SN 2004et
(cf. IAUC 7294) and SN 1999em (cf. IAUC 8413) at 35 and 33 days after
explosion, respectively. Adopting the NED recession velocity of 2378 km/s
for the host galaxy (from Binggeli et al. 1985, A.J. 90, 1681), the maximum
absorption of the H-alpha line indicates an expansion velocity of about 6000
km/s.
