SUPERNOVAE 2008ig AND 2008ii
     M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory (LCO); and P. Lira, University
of Chile, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that a spectrum
(range 380-920 nm) of 2008ig (cf. CBET 1620), obtained on Dec. 23.2 UT with
the du Pont telecope (+ WFCCD) at LCO, shows it to be a type-Ia supernova
around a week past maximum light. With use of the "SuperNova IDentification"
program (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), they find 2008ig to be
very similar to SN 1998bu at nine days past maximum. Adopting a host-galaxy
recession velocity of 8984 km/s (Rothberg and Joseph 2006, A.J. 131, 185) for
the host galaxy (ESO 269-20), Si II is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly
10000 km/s. A spectrogram of SN 2008ii (cf. CBET 1625), obtained on Dec.
24.2, shows it to be a type-Ia supernova around three weeks past maximum light.
Adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 5695 km/s (HI Parkes
All-Sky-Survey Final Catalogue) for the host galaxy (PGC 44965 = ESO 381-50),
Si II is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 6500 km/s.
