SUPERNOVA 2008ic
     H. Navasardyan, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, and M. Turatto, Istituto
Nazionale di Astrofisica, Padova; and A. Harutyunyan, Telescopio Nazionale
Galileo (TNG), report the serendipitous discovery of an apparent supernova
(mag approximately 19.6 +/- 0.1) on a R-band image taken on Nov. 24.19 UT
with the TNG (+ DOLORES) in the field of SN 2008ax (cf. CBET 1280). The new
object, designated 2008ic and also present at mag approximately 19.8 +/-
0.1 in an image taken with the Ekar-Copernicus 1.82-m telescope (+ AFOSC)
on Dec. 9.21, is located at R.A. = 12h30m26s.22 +/- 0".03, Decl. =
+41o36'16".11 +/- 0".3 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 4".2 south of the
center of a highly inclined galaxy. Nothing is visible at this position on
archival images taken on July 5.9 (limiting mag 19.8). A combination of
two spectrograms (range 380-950 nm, resolution about 1.0 nm) -- one taken
with AFOSC on Dec. 8.19, and the other taken with TNG (+ DOLORES) on Dec.
8.27 -- shows 2008ic to be a type-II supernova few weeks after explosion.
The GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383) best fit is obtained
with spectra of several unreddened type-II supernovae about one month after
explosion (Asiago Supernova Archive). The redshift, as derived from a
narrow, faint H-alpha emission superimposed on the broader one, is about
0.065; adopting this redshift, an expansion velocity of about 8200 km/s is
derived from the H-alpha P-Cyg absorption.
