SUPERNOVA 2007it IN NGC 5530
     C. Contreras, N. Morrell and S. Gonzalez, on behalf of the Carnegie
Supernova Project; and K.-G. Lee, Princeton University, report photometric
and spectroscopic observations performed at Las Campanas Observatory that
confirm the bright variable in NGC 5530 announced on CBET 1065 as a
bona-fide supernova, now designated as 2007it. On u'-, g'-, r'-, i'-, B-,
and V-band CCD images obtained on Sept. 14.03 UT at the 1-m Swope telescope,
2007it is found at R.A. = 14h18m25s.627, Decl. = -43o22'53".80 (equinox
2000.0), with B magnitude 13.1 +/- 0.3, relative to 40 field stars in the
USNO-B1 catalogue. A spectrum (range 370-680 nm) obtained on Sept. 14.98
with the Boller & Chivens spectrograph attached to the 2.5-m du Pont
telescope shows of blue continuum with superimposed Balmer lines displaying
P-Cyg profiles, characteristic of young type-II supernovae. Adopting for
the parent galaxy the recession velocity of 1193 km/s provided by the NED
database (Koribalski et al. 2004, A.J. 128, 16), the minimum of the H_beta
absorption yields an expansion velocity of 10960 km/s.
From his CCD image taken on Sept. 13.45 UT (cf. CBET 1065), S. Quirk,
Mudgee, N.S.W., reports the following precise position for SN 2007it: R.A.
= 14h18m25s.57, Decl. = -43o22'54".0 (equinox 2000.0). Another image
taken by Quirk the following night in better seeing conditions yields
position end figures 25s.57, 54".2, and magnitude R = 13.8.
