SUPERNOVA 2007nq IN UGC 595
     R. Quimby, California Institute of Technology; F. Yuan and C. Akerloff,
University of Michigan; and J. C. Wheeler, University of Texas, report the
discovery of a supernova (mag about 17.6) in unfiltered CCD images taken on
Oct. 21.15 UT using the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at the McDonald
Observatory. The new object is located at R.A. = 0h57m33s.57, Decl. =
-1o23'19".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 20".2 west and 8".9 north of the
center of UGC 595; it was found by subtracting a co-addition of images
taken between Aug. 10 and 16 (limiting mag about 19.2). A spectrum (range
420-890 nm) of 2007nq obtained on Oct. 23.19 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly
Telescope (+ Marcario Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by M. Shetrone, E.
Terrazas, and V. Riley shows it to be a type-Ia supernova, similar to SN
1992A prior to maximum light (Kirshner et al. 1993, Ap.J. 415, 589).
Adopting the host-galaxy redshift of z = 0.045, the expansion velocity,
derived from the minimum of the Si II (rest 635.5 nm) line, is 12500 km/s.
