SUPERNOVA 2006bj
Further to IAUC 8622, R. Quimby, University of Texas, reports the
discovery of an apparent supernova in unfiltered CCD images taken with
the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at the McDonald Observatory on Mar.
26.19 (at mag about 17.3) and Apr. 2.17 UT (mag about 17.2). The new
object is located at R.A. = 12h22m19s.16, Decl. = +7o37'25".3 (equinox
2000.0; uncertainty +/- 0".5), which is 1".1 east and 1".1 north of
the center of the apparent host galaxy. The supernova was found by
subtracting a co-addition of images taken between 2004 Dec. 15 and 2005
May 9 (limiting mag about 19.0). A spectrum (range 420-890 nm), obtained
on Mar. 3.34 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario
Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by S. C. Odewahn and F. Deglman, shows
2006bj to be a young type-II supernova. The spectrum consists of a blue
continuum mostly devoid of features except for (most notably) a weak,
broad absorption near 493 nm. Using narrow emission lines superimposed
from the host galaxy, a redshift of z = 0.038 is calculated.
