SUPERNOVA 2006cu IN UGC 9530
The "Nearby Supernova Factory" collaboration (P. Antilogus, S. Gilles,
R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et de Haute
Energies de Paris; N. Blanc, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, and G. Smadja, Institut
de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; G. Aldering, C. Aragon, S. Bailey, S.
Bongard, D. Kocevski, S. Loken, P. Nugent, S. Perlmutter, K. Runge, R.
Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, Berkeley; E. Pecontal and G. Rigaudier, Centre de Recherche
Astronomique de Lyon; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics,
Chicago; and C. Baltay, A. Bauer, D. Herrera, and D. Rabinowitz, Yale
University), reports the discovery of a supernova (mag approximately 18.1,
calibrated to R) in NEAT images (cf. CBET 263) obtained on May 29.4 UT using
the QUEST II camera in drift-scan mode on the Palomar 1.2-m Schmidt telescope.
SN 2006cu is located at R.A. = 14h47m43s.31, Decl. = +9o39'33".9 (equinox
2000.0); the apparent host galaxy, UGC 9530, has z = 0.0286 (de Vaucouleurs
et al. 1991, Third Ref. Cat. of Bright Galaxies, ver. 3.9). A spectrum
(range 320-1000 nm), obtained on June 3.4 with the Supernova Integral Field
Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, reveals that 2006cu
is a type-IIn supernova, exhibiting the typical narrow Balmer emission lines.
