SUPERNOVA 2006df
The 'Nearby Supernova Factory' collaboration (P. Antilogus, S.
Gilles, R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et
de Haute Energies de Paris; N. Blanc, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, and G.
Smadja, Institut de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; G. Aldering, C.
Aragon, S. Bailey, S. Bongard, M. J. Childress, S. J. Ferrell, D.
Kocevski, S. Loken, P. Nugent, J. Parrent, S. Perlmutter, K. Runge,
R. Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory, Berkeley; E. Pecontal and G. Rigaudier, Centre
de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for
Cosmological Physics, Chicago; and C. Baltay, A. Bauer, D. Herrera,
and D. Rabinowitz, Yale University) reports the discovery of a
supernova (mag approximately 19.5, calibrated to R) in NEAT images
(cf. CBET 263) obtained on June 16.5 UT with the QUEST II camera on
the Palomar 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt telescope. SN 2006df is located at
R.A. = 21h49m57s.67, Decl. = +32o01'58".7 (equinox 2000.0).  A
spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of 2006df, obtained on June 20.6 with
the Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii
2.2-m telescope, shows it to be a type-IIn supernova at an approximate
redshift of z = 0.12 as measured from the peak of its prominent, narrow
H-alpha emission feature. The H-alpha feature appears asymmetric,
extending to 6000 km/s blueward and 2000 km/s redward (rest frame,
measured at continuum). A weak, broad emission from He I 587.6-nm is
also discernible.
