SUPERNOVA 2006lh
     The "Nearby Supernova Factory" collaboration (E. Pecontal and G.
Rigaudier, Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon; P. Antilogus, S.
Gilles, R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et
de Haute Energies de Paris; C. Buton, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, and G.
Smadja, Institut de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; G. Aldering, C. Aragon,
S. Bailey, S. Bongard, M. J. Childress, S. Koshy, S. Loken, P. Nugent,
S. Perlmutter, K. Runge, R. Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, and B. A. Weaver,
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley; R. Kessler, Kavli
Institute for Cosmological Physics, Chicago; and C. Baltay, A. Bauer,
D. Herrera, and D. Rabinowitz, Yale University) reports the discovery
of a supernova (mag approximately 19.4, calibrated to R) in NEAT images
(cf. CBET 263) obtained on Oct. 24.2 UT using the QUEST II camera on
the Palomar Oschin 1.2-m Schmidt telescope as a part of the Palomar-
QUEST Consortium.  The new object is located at R.A. = 23h26m51s.60,
Decl. = +9d19'57".6 (equinox 2000.0).  Nothing was visible at this
location on an image obtained on Oct. 9.  A spectrum (range 320-1000
nm) of 2006lh, obtained on Oct. 28.3 with the Supernova Integral Field
Spectrograph on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope, reveals that
it is a young type-II supernova at a redshift of z = 0.032, judging
from the location of the peak of its H-alpha P-Cyg emission.  P-Cyg
H-beta is also detected.  A maximum ejection velocity of 8600 km/s is
measured from the blue wing of the H-alpha absorption.
