SUPERNOVA 2006lu
     N. Morrell and G. Folatelli, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova
Project, report that a spectrogram (range 401-1020 nm) of 2006lu (cf.
IAUC 8770), obtained on Nov. 3.31 UT with the EMMI spectrograph attached
to the New Technology Telescope at La Silla, reveals that it is a
type-Ia supernova, a few days after maximum light. A narrow emission
line was identified as H-alpha produced by the host galaxy. From the
position of that line, a redshift of z = 0.053 was derived for the
host. Adopting that redshift value, the spectral-feature dating code
by Riess et al. (1997, A.J. 114, 722) yields an age of 5.5 days after
maximum light. Using the 'superfit' supernova-spectrum-comparison
code (Howell et al. 2005, Ap.J. 634, 1190), the best match is a
spectrum of SN 1990N, seven days after maximum. An expansion velocity
of 10500 km/s was derived from the absorption minimum of the Si II
635.5-nm feature.
