SUPERNOVA 2006mr IN NGC 1316
     L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an
apparent supernova (mag about 15.6 +/- 0.3) on unfiltered CCD images taken
with the 0.30-m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (+ ST-7 CCD camera) at the
Bronberg Observatory on Nov. 5.758 UT, with a confirming image taken on Nov.
6.765 (the new object then at mag 15.2 +/- 0.2). SN 2006mr is located at
R.A. = 3h22m42s.84, Decl. = -37d12'28".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 14" east
and 0".3 north of the nucleus of NGC 1316. Nothing is visible at this
location on the Digitized Sky Survey (limiting red mag 20.5) or on earlier
images taken by Monard (the most recent having been obtained on 2006 Sept.
27.128, with limiting red mag 17.0). Note that SN 2006dd has position end
figures 41s.62, 13".0 (cf. IAUC 8723). Monard adds that G. Folatelli
obtained an image on Nov. 5/6 that shows both supernovae (with 2006mr now
brighter than 2006dd), noting that an image from Sept. 2 shows 2006dd and
nothing at the position of 2006mr; Folatelli provides position end figures
43s.04, 29".3 for 2006mr.
