SUPERNOVA 2006mr IN NGC 1316
     M. M. Phillips, G. Folatelli, C. Contreras, and N. Morrell, on
behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that a spectrum
(range 380-990 nm) of 2006mr (cf. CBET 723), obtained on Nov. 9.15
UT with the LDSS-3 spectrograph attached to the Magellan Clay 6.5-m
telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO), reveals that this is a
type-Ia supernova very similar in appearance to SN 1986G. Adopting
a recession velocity of 1760 km/s for the host galaxy (cf. Longhetti
et al. 1998, A.Ap. Suppl. 130, 267), an approximate expansion
velocity of 11000 km/s was derived from the absorption minimum of
the Si II 635.5-nm line. This is similar to the expansion velocity
displayed by SN 1986G a few days before maximum. Strong Na I D
interstellar absorption at the redshift of NGC 1316 was detected
with an equivalent width of about 0.32 nm, suggesting that the
supernova may be significantly reddened. Measurements of CCD images
obtained with the LCO Swope 1-m telescope give the following
approximate magnitudes, which confirm that the supernova is still on
the rise: 2006 Nov. 7, B = 15.85 +/- 0.05, V = 15.14 +/- 0.06; Nov.
9, B = 15.42 +/- 0.03, V = 14.67 +/- 0.04.
