SUPERNOVA 2006os IN UGC 2384
Further to IAUC 8622, R. Quimby and F. Castro, University of Texas,
report the discovery of a supernova (mag about 17.2) on unfiltered CCD
images taken on Nov 21.18 UT using the 0.45-m ROTSE-IIIb telescope at the
McDonald Observatory. SN 2006os is located at R.A. = 2h55m01s.01, Decl. =
+16o00'34".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 6".2 east and 10".4 south of the
center of UGC 2384 (catalogued redshift of z = 0.033 from Huchra et al.
1999, Ap.J. Suppl. 121, 287, via NED). A spectrum (range 420-890 nm),
obtained on Nov. 22.15 with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (+ Marcario
Low-Resolution Spectrograph) by H. Edelmann and V. Riley, shows 2006os to
be a type-Ia supernova. The spectrum is similar to that of SN 1992A
around maximum light. Adopting the above host-galaxy redshift, the
expansion velocity derived from the minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm feature
is 12700 km/s. A narrow absorption line consistent with Na I D in the
UGC 2384 rest frame suggests some absorption from within the host.
