(22) KALLIOPE I (LINUS)
     J. Berthier, Institut de Mecanique Celeste et de Calcul des Ephemerides
(IMCCE), Paris Observatory; F. Marchis, University of California at Berkeley
(UCB); and P. Descamps, D. Hestroffer, F. Vachier, and F. Colas, IMCCE,
report that they have refined the orbital elements of the satellite of (22)
Kalliope (cf. IAUC 7703, 8177, 8338), based on the successful observation of
the Nov. 7 stellar occultation reported by Soma et al. (CBET 732) and on an
observation taken with W. M. Keck-II adaptive Optics System by C. Laver, M.
Adamkovics, and I. de Pater (UCB) on Dec. 12.5701 UT, when the moonlet was
located 0".868 from the primary in p.a. 174.1 degrees. According to the
improved orbit, the two forthcoming stellar occultations on 2007 Jan. 2 and
8 will occur when the satellite is located, relative to the primary, at
Delta(R.A.) = +0".40 and Delta(Decl.) = -0".33 on Jan. 2.67292, and at
Delta(R.A.) = +0".02 and Delta(Decl.) = +0".86 on Jan. 8.86074. The
occultations are expected to last < 4 s along an approximately 40-km-wide
shadow. Shadow path, details, and updates can be obtained at the following
website URL:
http://www.imcce.fr/page.php?nav=en/ephemerides/phenomenes/
occult/stellarocc.php?query=predoc
The observations of these stellar-occultation events are encouraged, in
order to improve the measurement of Linus' radius as previously obtained
during the Nov. 7 event and to refine the predictions of mutual eclipses
that will occur in February and March 2007 (Descamps et al., Proceedings
2006 Paris MEOTUS Workshop, Planetary and Space Science, in press).
