SUPERNOVA 2007A IN NGC 105
F. Olivares and M. Hamuy, University of Chile; and N. Morrell,
Las Campanas Observatory, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project,
report spectroscopic observations (range 400-1000 nm) of 2007A (cf.
CBET 795), obtained on Jan. 6.06 UT with the European Southern
Observatory's 3.5-m New Technology Telescope (+ EMMI spectrograph).
The spectrum of 2007A bears strong resemblance to that of the normal
type-Ia supernova 1994D obtained 3 days before maximum light. Assuming
a recession velocity of 5290 km/s for the host galaxy (Sandage 1978,
A.J. 83, 904), an expansion velocity of 11000 km/s is derived from the
absorption minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm doublet, which is the expected
velocity for normal type-Ia supernovae near maximum light. A narrow
interstellar Na I 589.3-nm absorption at the redshift of the host galaxy
is detected with a formal equivalent width of 0.80 nm (with a large
uncertainty). The blue continuum of the spectrum suggests only moderate
reddening.
