SUPERNOVA 2007ax IN NGC 2577
     R. Arbour, South Wonston, Hants, U.K., reports his discovery
of an apparent supernova (mag 17.2) on several unfiltered CCD
images (limiting mag about 19.0) taken on Mar. 21.978 UT using a
0.4-m f/5 reflector (+ Starlight Xpress CCD camera) in the course
of his supernova patrol; 2007ax is located at R.A. = 8h22m43s.26,
Decl. = +22o33'16".9 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2".6 west and 5".5
north of the center of the galaxy NGC 2577. Nothing was visible
at this position on a Palomar Sky Survey blue plate from 1997
Mar. 9 or a red plate from 1993 Dec. 9 (both viewed via the
Digitized Sky Survey), and nothing is present on Arbour's images
from Jan. 23.893 and Mar. 9.959 (limiting mag about 19.0).
Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects
webpage, H. Yamaoka (Kyushu University) reports that K. Itagaki
(Yamagata, Japan) detected 2007ax at mag about 16.4 on an unfiltered
CCD image taken on Mar. 23.499 UT. Nothing is obviously visible
on an image taken by Itagaki on Mar. 17.636 (limiting mag guessed
at about 17.0; the limiting magnitude of the image is rather deep
-- perhaps about 18.5 -- but the location of the new star is near to
the center of the host galaxy, so he estimated a brighter limiting
magnitude).
