SUPERNOVA 2007cc IN ESO 578-G26
     S. Blondin, M. Modjaz, R. Kirshner, and P. Challis,
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, report that a spectrum
(range 350-740 nm) of SN 2007cc (cf. CBET 949), obtained on May 9.30
UT by W. Peters with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+
FAST), shows it to be a type-Ia supernova around two weeks past maximum
light. The supernova spectrum is contaminated by that of its host
galaxy. Cross-correlation with a library of type-Ia supernova spectra
indicates that SN 2007cc is most similar to SN 1990N at 15 days past
maximum light. Adopting a recession velocity of 8720 km/s for the host
galaxy (from de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991, Third Ref. Cat. of Bright
Galaxies), the maximum absorption in the Si II line (rest 635.5 nm) is
blueshifted by roughly 9500 km/s.
