Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Department of Applied Geology and Geophysics.

The Department of Applied Geosciences and Geophysics, Chair of Applied Geophysics,
invites applications for a 3-year limited-term Research Assistant. The minimum salary is €
2.237,60 (14 x per year, pay scale B1 according to Uni-KV) plus benefits. The actual salary
may vary depending on experience.

The position is part of the FWF-funded (Austrian Science Fund) research project on “Origins
of Seismic Reflectivity in Lower Crustal Rocks”, which will be conducted within the
framework of the Drilling the Ivrea-Verbano zonE (DIVE - http://www.dive2ivrea.org/)
project. A Master degree in geophysics, geoscience, physics or a similar discipline is required
at the time of the appointment as well as the wish to obtain a PhD degree.

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of well logging methods and
interpretation, as well as very good programming skills preferably in Python or Matlab.
Knowledge of geostatistical and petrophysical methods and seismic attributes are an
advantage. The applicant must be fluent in spoken and written English. Knowledge of
German is desirable.

The position will involve the interpretation of geophysical borehole data to characterize the
perforated lithologies. The candidate is expected to apply and adapt geostatistical methods for
rock mass classification in crystalline rocks. This should provide insights into the
interdependencies between measured properties and petrological factors controlling them. The
results will then be used to predict seismic attributes from well log responses and to shed a
light on the origin of seismic reflectivity in lower crustal rocks.

The position offers an excellent opportunity for a young researcher to work in an
interdisciplinary international project of high impact with plenty of opportunities to network
as well as to start a successful academic career.

Please submit your application in English no later than 01/04/2022 using the online-form and
link to the job reference number 2202WPE on the university website
https://www.unileoben.ac.at/en/jobs
For your application, please include

CV

Copies of diplomas and university transcripts

Letter of motivation

Names and contact information of two referees

For further questions, please contact the secretary (geophysik@unileoben.ac.at) or Ass. Prof.
9 positions for doctoral candidates (m/w/d)

The newly established International Doctoral Program „Measuring and Modelling Mountain
Glaciers in a Changing Climate” (IDP M3OCCA) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-
Nürnberg announces 9 positions for doctoral candidates (m/w/d) (75/100%, E13 TV-L).

The International Doctoral Program aims at developing methods and models as well as innovative
measuring technologies for the assessment of glacier changes. Sub-projects will target the
development of a new multi-frequency radar system or focus on advance tomographic analysis of
SAR data. Deep learning techniques will be applied on satellite data and radargrams to extract
various glaciological variables. Machine learning techniques will be integrated in geophysical
models of glaciers and models of atmosphere-ice interaction. Within IDP M3OCCA there is also a
sub-project aiming at linking ice dynamic with permafrost and slope stability modelling. The IDP
aims at an interdisciplinary education of its doctoral researchers from the fields of geography,
geosciences, geophysics, mathematics, computer sciences and electrical engineering. IDP M3OCCA
is coordinated at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg with sub-projects located at Technical University
Munich, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences as well as the German Aerospace Center in
Oberpfaffenhofen. The interdisciplinary education program of the doctoral program comprises
colloquia, workshops, research retreats as well as specific class work depending on the background
of the doctoral candidates.

The working language within the IDP is Englisch. More information on the IDP, the various sub-
projects, the respective contact information as well as required skill sets can be found under https://
www.geography.nat.fau.eu/idp-mocca-measuring-and-modelling-mountain-glaciers-and-ice-
caps-in-a-changing-climate/. All positions run for 4 years and shall be filled by 1 June 2022.
Funding is provided within the Elite Network Bavaria of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and
the Arts.

Applications
Applications shall comprise a CV, certificates/transcripts of records of university degrees,
publication list (if applicable), contact details of references as well as a research concept for the
intended topic, which also states how your qualifications could be ideally employed in the project.
The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is seeking to augment the number
of women in research and teaching and specifically addresses female scientists to apply for these
positions. We further encourage persons with disabilities to apply. If desired, a member of the equal
opportunity office of FAU can participate in the selection process without any disadvantage for the
applicant.
Please submit all documents as one file (PDF) via email to sabine.donner@fau.de and relate to the
respective sub-project and IDP M3OCCA in the subject. Applications for various sub-projects are
feasible. In this case we ask the candidates to name priorities. Positions are open until filled,

however screening of applications will start 28 February 2022. Please address questions to sub-
projects to the respective coordinators; general questions to the IDP can be directed to the

spokesperson Prof. Dr. Matthias Braun (Institut für Geographie, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg,
Wetterkreuz 15. D-91058 Erlangen, matthias.h.braun@fau.de).
